Description
This
medal
was
created
in
1972
to
commemorate
the
American
Revolution
. The
obverse
shows
a
bust
of
George
Washington
,
which
was
based
on the
Houdon
Bust
by
Jean
Antoine
Houdon
, a
French
sculptor
.
Governor
Harrison
of
Virginia
asked
Houdon
to
come
to the
United
States
to
prepare
a
model
of
George
Washington's
head
for an
official
statue-
Houdon's
life
mask
is
actually
the
only
one
of
President
Washington
. The
statue
was
erected
in
Richmond
,
Virginia
on
May
14
,
1796
.
Under
the
right
profile
of
George
Washington
is
the
official
symbol
of the
American
Revolution
Bicentennial
(in
miniature)
. There are
three
major
symbols
on the
reverse
side
: the
Liberty
Tree
, the
two-shilling
six-pence
stamp
required
by
Parliament's
Stamp
Act
in
1765
, and the "
Join
or
Die
"
slogan
. The
Sons
of
Liberty
arose
in
1765
during
the
Stamp
Act
crisis
,
which
required
stamps
of
various
amounts
to be
affixed
to
all
licenses
,
publications
, and
legal
documents
. The
purpose
was to
help
finance
the
colonial
military
, but
it
had
widespread
opposition
in the
colonies
. This
Act
played
a
critical
role
in
moving
protest
towards
the
final
outbreak
of
hostilities
between
England
and the
American
colonies
. The
Sons
of
Liberty
were
basically
the
visible
,
active
, and
organized
manifestation
of the
Revolutionary
cause
. They
represent
the
broad-based
nature
of the
movement
including
artisans
,
humble
workmen
, and also the
leading
political
figures
. The
symbol
associated
with them was the
Liberty
pole
or
Liberty
Tree
. The
last
symbol
on this
medal
, the
slogan
"
Join
or
Die
",
first
appeared
as the
caption
of an
illustration
along
with an
editorial
by
Benjamin
Franklin
in the
Pennsylvania
Gazette
of
May
9
,
1754
.
It
referred
to
disunity
among
the
British
colonies
, and
meant
if they
did
not
unite
, they were in
danger
of
being
destroyed
by the
French
.
Eventually
the
slogan
signified
uniting
in their
struggle
for their
right
against
interference
from
Britain
.
