Description
Nero
was the
Roman
emperor
from
54
AD
to
68
AD
ascending
to the
throne
after
his
uncle
Claudius's
death
.
Although
his
mother
helped
him into the
throne
,
once
he
gained
power
he
estranged
her and
later
made
several
attempts
at
taking
her
life
.
Eventually
he
sent
an
assassin
who
beat
and
stabbed
her to
death
. His
reign
was
characterized
by his
extravagance
, his
fondness
for
singing
and
drama
, and his
cruelty
to his
enemies
.
When
in
64
AD
a
fire
destroyed
much
of
Rome
Nero
was
suspected
of
starting
the
fire
to
clear
the
space
for his
Domus
Aurea
. To
appease
the
people
, the
Christians
were
blamed
for the
fire
and
persecuted
,
some
of them
even
being
burned
like
lanterns
in the
plaice
garden
.
Nero
was the
first
to
tamper
with
Roman
coinage
so
that he
could
pay
for his
extravagant
life
style
and
building
projects
.
Deceiving
the
populace
into
thinking
the
now
lighter
coins
were the
same
as
earlier
ones
,
Nero
gained
a
temporary
15%
profit
. By
268
AD
, the
amount
of
silver
had been
reduced
to
5%
.
Originally
, the
denarius
was a
distinctively
Roman
coin
, a
silver
coin
nearly
equivalent
to the
Greek
drachm
. The
denarius
was a
day's
pay
for a
Roman
soldier
and the
coin
required
for the
Roman
tax
.
