Description
This
zinc
coin
is
an
example
of a
Missouri
one
mill
sales
tax
token
or
sales
tax
receipt
worth
one
tenth
of a
cent
.
Both
the
obverse
and the
reverse
show
the
state
of
Missouri
in the
center
of the
token
with the
number
"
1
"
inside
and the
words
"
Missouri
" and "
Sales
Tax
Receipt
"
around
it
.
Missouri
issued
a
variety
of
sales
tax
tokens
, and
though
this
is
example
is
made
from
zinc
,
some
of the
first
tokens
were
plastic
milk
bottle
caps
.
Missouri
had
sales
tax
tokens
from
August
,
1935
to
December
,
1961
.
Missouri
was
one
of the
first
states
to
issue
these
tokens
and the
last
to
remove
the
sales
tax
token
laws
from its
books
.
During
the
Great
Depression
,
some
states
implemented
a
sales
tax
to
raise
revenue
. The
sales
tax
was
usually
1-3%
of the
purchase
, and with
purchases
under
a
dollar
,
it
was
difficult
to
charge
tax
because
it
is
impossible
to
give
change
in
tenths
of a
cent
. If the
seller
rounded
down
, then
no
tax
would be
charged
, and if he
rounded
up
, then he would
lose
money
and the
government
would
gain
more
than the
sales
tax
.
So
,
twelve
states
issued
sales
tax
tokens
, also
called
sales
tax
receipts
,
so
people
could
pay
the
sales
tax
.
Thus
, if
someone
purchased
an
item
worth
ten
cents
and the
sales
tax
was
two
percent
, then the
seller
would
charge
eleven
cents
and
give
the
customer
sales
tax
tokens
totaling
eight
mill
for
change
. They would then
use
these
tokens
to
pay
the
tax
on
other
purchases
.
