Description
This
coin
is
a
copper
fals
minted
in
1227
AD
during
the
reign
of
Queen
Rusudan
of
Georgia
. The
obverse
of the
coin
includes
initials
that
stand
for
Rusudan
surrounded
by a
square
,
ornamental
design
. The
date
is
also
included
around
the
outside
of the
design
. The
reverse
bears
a
four
line
Arabic
inscription
that
translates
: "
Queen
of
Kings
and
Queens
;
Glory
of the
World
,
Kingdom
and
Faith
;
Rusudan
,
daughter
of
Tamar
,
Champion
of the
Messiah
;
May
God
increase
[her]
victories.
"
Queen
Rusudan
ruled
Georgia
from
1223
to
1245
AD
. Her
rule
was
largely
unsuccessful
, as
it
was
defined
by
invasions
by the
Jalal
al-Din
from
Khwarazm
and the
Mongols
. In the
early
13th
century
, the
Mongols
invaded
Khwarazm
,
located
in
Central
Asia
and what
is
now
Uzbekistan
. The
displaced
ruler
of
Khwarazm
,
Jalal
al-Din
, then
invaded
Georgia
and
defeated
the
Georgian
and
Armenian
army
in
1225
,
driving
the
queen
and her
court
into the
western
part
of the
country
. The
Mongols
then
defeated
Jalal
al-Din
in
1230
,
allowing
the
queen
to
return
to the
city
of
Tiflis
in
eastern
Georgia
. In
1235
,
however
, the
Mongols
invaded
and
conquered
Georgia
by the
early
1240s
.
Queen
Rusudan
was then
required
to
pay
tribute
to and
supply
an
army
for the
Mongols
.
When
Queen
Rusudan
first
took
refuge
in
western
Georgia
, she
minted
copper
coins
with the
date
1227
on them.
Though
production
of the
coins
probably
continued
until
after
she
returned
to
Tiflis
in
1230
, the
coins
all
bear
the
same
date
of
1227
AD
.
