Description
This
silver
drachm
was
minted
in
Parthia
during
the
reign
of
Artabanos
II
(10-38
AD)
. The
obverse
shows
a
diademed
bust
, and the
reverse
shows
a
seated
archer
holding
a
bow
,
surrounded
by an
inscription
. The
drachm
was
one
of the
main
denominations
used
in the
Parthian
Empire
. By the
middle
of the
first
century
BC
,
however
,
Parthian
coinage
,
including
the
drachm
,
started
to
lose
its "
artistic
merit
"
though
the
silver
content
remained
good
and
constant
.
Early
Parthian
art
and
coinage
was
influenced
by
other
cultures
,
especially
Greek
culture
. The
coinage
of
Artabanos
II
,
however
,
shows
a
more
definite
break
with the
Greek
or
Hellenistic
tradition
in
Parthian
coinage
.
Artabanos
II
had
anti-Greek
sentiments
, and the
obverse
images
of the
coins
became
more
stylized
with
little
to
no
Greek
influence
. Also, the
reverse
inscriptions
contained
more
and
more
errors
as the
engravers
became
less
familiar
with the
Greek
language
. These
inscriptions
eventually
evolved
into
using
the
Aramaic
and
Parthian
languages
. The
reign
of
Artabanos
II
was
filled
with
internal
conflicts
and
strife
, and he was
twice
chased
from his
position
into
temporary
exile
. He
returned
both
times
to
resume
rule
of his
kingdom
until
he
died
in
38
AD
.
