Description
This
silver
dirhem
was
minted
in
Wasit
,
which
was
part
of the
Umayyad
Dynasty
,
during
the
reign
of
Suleiman
(715-717
AD)
. The
obverse
of this
coin
bears
an
inscription
of the
Kalima
or
declaration
of the
Islamic
faith
in the
field
of the
coin
,
which
states
:
“There
is
no
deity
except
Allah
alone
. He has
no
equal.”
The
marginal
inscription
says
,
“In
the
name
of
Allah
this
dirhem
was
struck
in
Wasit
in the
year
six
and
ninety.”
The
reverse
of this
coin
also
bears
an
Islamic
declaration
that
states
that
Allah
is
one
God
and
is
neither
begotten
nor
begets
. The
marginal
inscription
says
that
Muhammad
is
the
messenger
or
prophet
of
Allah
and
Allah
sent
him to
reveal
the
truth
over
all
religions
.
Umayyad
coinage
was
originally
copied
from the
Sasanian
drachms
,
though
they
replaced
the
Sasanian
images
and
writing
with
Arabic
script
and
Hijri
dating
.
Suleiman
succeeded
his
brother
,
Walid
I
, as the
ruler
of the
Umayyad
Empire
, and he
reigned
for
two
years
(715-717
AD)
.
Before
his
death
, he
strayed
from the
custom
of
hereditary
succession
and
appointed
his
cousin
,
Umar
b
.
Abd
al-Aziz
as the
new
caliph
. The
Umayyad
Dynasty
ended
in
750
AD
when
the
Abbasids
overthrew
it
and
murdered
most
of the
ruling
family
. The
Umayyad
dynasty
survived
only
in
Spain
,
when
Abd
Al-Rahman
I
instituted
the
Umayyad
emirate
in
Cordoba
.
